ChatGPT may start showing ads

ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence platform, has generated over $2 billion in revenue with its mobile app, but the most important question for the platform remains unanswered: Will users see ads during chat? OpenAI has left the door open to this question.

ChatGPT CEO Nick Turley stated in an interview that they are open to the idea of displaying ads, but that they should be implemented in a way that doesn’t disrupt users. He noted that due to the platform’s user-focused nature, direct advertising may not be suitable.

However, OpenAI is working on a new revenue model called “Commerce in ChatGPT.” This model involves receiving a commission from purchase recommendations made within ChatGPT. The company states that this partnership will not resemble influencer marketing and that product selections will remain independent.

ChatGPT, which has reached 700 million users in total, has only 20 million paid subscribers. This creates the potential for OpenAI to direct free users to premium services. The company aims to both increase revenue and encourage its broad user base to use more services through advertising and commission models.

The platform’s executives say the goal of this new revenue model isn’t just to generate advertising revenue, but also to ensure the sustainability of the core services offered to free users. With these commercial strategies, OpenAI aims to maintain the quality of ChatGPT’s service.

Without disrupting users’ chat experience, intelligent and independent purchase recommendations create a new revenue stream while also ensuring the service remains free. This approach will support both ChatGPT’s commercial success and the expansion of its user base.
